Chiropractic Adjustments

A chiropractic adjustment restores proper motion to those joints, restoring function, reducing nerve interference and allowing the body to heal and function more effectively.

At Sunrise, we use the Activator Method for our adjustments: a research-backed, instrument-assisted technique that delivers measured, precise impulses to restore joint motion and reduce nerve interference. This is comfortable enough for young children and effective enough for chronic conditions.

Adjustments can address a specific complaint like back pain, migraines, or sciatica, or serve as ongoing maintenance to keep your nervous system functioning at its best.

Chiropractic Adjustment FAQs
  • Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?

Chiropractic adjustments do not have to hurt. At Sunrise Chiropractic in Santa Barbara, all adjustments use the Activator Method, a low-force, instrument-based technique with no twisting, cracking, or sudden movements. Most patients describe their visits as comfortable and often relaxing. There may be some residual soreness as your body adjusts but it should get better with time.

  • What does a chiropractor treat?

Chiropractors treat conditions affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Common reasons people seek chiropractic care include back pain, neck pain, headaches and migraines, sciatica, shoulder and hip pain, TMJ dysfunction, and postural issues. Many patients also use regular chiropractic care proactively to maintain alignment, manage stress, and support overall wellness before problems develop.

  • How often should you go to the chiropractor?

Visit frequency depends on your goals and starting point. Patients addressing a specific complaint typically begin with more frequent visits (2-3 times per week) and taper as they improve. Those using chiropractic for ongoing wellness often settle into a monthly or bi-monthly rhythm. A good chiropractor will give you an honest, individualized recommendation rather than a one-size-fits-all plan

  • Do you need to be in pain to see a chiropractor?

No. Many people see a chiropractor for proactive wellness care rather than pain relief, the same way you don't wait for a toothache before seeing a dentist. Regular chiropractic adjustments support nervous system function, maintain spinal alignment, and help the body stay ahead of tension before it becomes a problem.

Pregnancy & Pediatric

Dr. Chloé is certified in the Webster Technique, a specialized chiropractic approach for pregnancy that gently restores balance to the pelvis and reduces tension in the soft tissue supporting the uterus, easing discomfort and creating more space for baby throughout all trimesters. Maintaining proper alignment in the pelvis throughout pregnancy can also make way for a smoother, easier delivery. After birth, the care continues.

Pediatric adjustments are very gentle and serve to support a child’s nervous system as it settles into the world, with no more pressure than you'd use to test the ripeness of a peach. As children grow, regular chiropractic care supports healthy development and helps the body adapt to the inevitable bumps, tumbles, and growth spurts along the way.

Pregnancy & Pediatric Chiropractic FAQs
  • Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Always confirm with your doctor, but prenatal chiropractic care is typically considered safe throughout all trimesters. The Webster Technique, used by certified practitioners like Dr. Chloé at Sunrise Chiropractic, is specifically designed for pregnancy and uses only gentle, low-force adjustments. Most OBs and midwives are familiar with prenatal chiropractic and supportive of it as part of a broader care plan.

  • When should you start chiropractic care during pregnancy?

You can start at any point during pregnancy. Many patients begin in the second or third trimester when discomfort increases, but chiropractic care offers benefits from early pregnancy through the postpartum period. The sooner the pelvis is balanced and supported, the longer you have to benefit from that alignment.

  • Are chiropractic adjustments safe for newborns?

Confirm with your pediatrician for your child, but newborn chiropractic adjustments are extremely gentle, using no more pressure than the soft press of a fingertip. Many parents bring babies in within the first few weeks of life, particularly after long or difficult deliveries, to support the nervous system as mom and baby adjust to life outside the womb.

  • What can pediatric chiropractic help with?

Parents bring children to chiropractors for a wide range of reasons including colic, difficulty latching, disrupted sleep, ear infections, and postural concerns. Ongoing pediatric chiropractic care also supports healthy nervous system development as children grow and become more physically active.

Cold Laser Therapy

We often use cold laser alongside chiropractic adjustments because the two work well together: adjustments restore proper alignment and joint motion, while cold laser supports the tissue healing that needs to happen around those joints for relief to last.

Cold Laser Therapy can also be used as a standalone treatment for patients who aren't yet ready for adjustments, or for areas of the body that need targeted support between visits.

The laser is held over the treatment area for a few minutes and produces no heat, no sensation, and no side effects. It is completely painless and requires no downtime.

Cold Laser Therapy FAQs
  • What is cold laser therapy used for?

Cold laser therapy is used to reduce pain and inflammation and accelerate tissue healing. It is FDA-cleared for a wide range of conditions including tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, arthritis, neck and back pain, sciatica, muscle strains, ligament sprains, TMJ dysfunction, nerve pain, and fibromyalgia. It is also used to support recovery from sports injuries and to reduce scar tissue formation after injury or surgery.

  • Does cold laser therapy actually work?

Yes, and it is well-researched. Cold laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy or LLLT, has been studied extensively across multiple medical fields including chiropractic care, physical therapy, and sports medicine. It is FDA-cleared for pain management and tissue repair. Most patients notice meaningful improvement over a series of sessions, with some experiencing relief after just a few visits.

  • What does cold laser therapy feel like?

Most patients feel nothing at all during treatment. There is no heat, no tingling, and no discomfort. The device is simply held near or against the skin over the treatment area for a few minutes. Sessions typically run between 10 and 15 minutes, and you can return to your normal activities immediately after.

  • How many sessions of cold laser therapy do you need?

This depends on the condition being treated. Acute injuries often respond within a few sessions. Chronic conditions typically benefit from a series of treatments over several weeks, with improvements building over time. After your assessment, we will give you a realistic picture of what to expect for your specific situation.

Custom Orthotics

Each foot has three distinct arches that work together to absorb shock, distribute weight, and maintain alignment up through your ankles, knees, hips, and spine. When one or more weakens, the imbalance travels upward through the kinetic chain, contributing to pain in places that seem entirely unrelated to your feet.

We offer Foot Levelers custom orthotics, built from a 3D scan of your feet taken while you stand, so the scan captures how your feet actually function under load. The orthotics are then individually fabricated to support all three arches and correct your specific imbalances. Not a generic shape, not cushioning as a band-aid, but a true structural correction from the ground up.

Custom Orthotic FAQs
  • What is the difference between custom orthotics and store-bought insoles?

Store-bought insoles are shaped to a generic foot and provide cushioning only. Custom orthotics like Foot Levelers are built from a 3D scan of your individual feet and designed to support all three arches of the foot, correcting the underlying structural cause of imbalance rather than adding padding on top of it. For patients with real biomechanical issues, the difference in outcome is significant.

  • Can foot problems cause back pain?

Yes. When the arches of the foot weaken or collapse, the imbalance travels up through the ankles, knees, hips, and spine, often contributing to low back pain, hip tension, and knee discomfort that seems unrelated to the feet. A 2017 study published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation found that Foot Levelers custom orthotics reduced chronic low back pain by 34.5%, even without additional treatments.

Standard Process Supplements

Standard Process has been producing whole-food nutritional supplements since 1929, made from ingredients grown on their own certified organic farm in Wisconsin and manufactured in-house from soil to supplement. Unlike isolated synthetic vitamins, their formulas deliver nutrients in a form the body already knows how to use.

Because they are a practitioner-only line, they are available exclusively through licensed healthcare providers like Sunrise, not in drugstores or online. We carry a curated selection to complement chiropractic care, because adjustments do their best work when the body has the nutritional building blocks it needs to heal and hold that progress.

Supplement FAQs
  • How do I know which supplements to take?

At Sunrise, your chiropractors will review your health history and current goals before recommending any Standard Process products, so every suggestion is specific to what your body actually needs. Standard Process offers formulas that target specific systems including digestion, immune function, hormone balance, musculoskeletal recovery, and energy support, and part of what makes the practitioner-only model work is that the recommendation comes from someone who knows your full picture.

  • What is the benefit of supplements over regular medication?

Supplements and medication serve different purposes, and both are important. Medications are generally designed to manage or suppress a symptom. Whole-food supplements like those from Standard Process are designed to give the body the raw nutritional materials it needs to function and repair itself more effectively.

Supplements are not a replacement for medication when medication is genuinely needed. Patients looking to support their body's healing capacity rather than mask what it's telling them, may find that whole-food nutrition can be a meaningful part of that approach. Standard Process supplements are also non-pharmaceutical, non-addictive, and carry none of the side effect profiles associated with long-term drug use.

What to Expect

At Sunrise, excellent care and an excellent experience are equally important to us. Whether it's your first visit or your hundredth, we want you to feel empowered in your body and confident in your care.

First Visit

75 MINUTES

We'll review your health history, discuss what brought you in, and complete a tailored physical assessment. We may refer you for X-rays if appropriate. You may receive your first adjustment the same day if the findings are clear.

Report of Findings

INCLUDED IN FIRST VISIT

We'll walk you through exactly what we found during your exam and go over your care plan. This includes the areas that need attention, appointment frequency, and our goals over time. We'll review any X-rays that were taken. You'll leave knowing specifically what's going on in your body and receive a concrete treatment plan.

Follow-Up Adjustments

10 MINUTES

Short, efficient visits that execute your treatment plan. For wellness patients, we usually start with weekly visits. For chronic conditions, we usually recommend 2 to 3 treatments a week for anywhere from 12-24 weeks, in order to start disrupting compensating patterns your body and nervous system may have developed. Your body progressively learns to hold its alignment longer, nerve interference decreases, and your body establishes a new, healthier baseline.

Maintenance Care

10 MINUTES

Many patients choose to continue with periodic visits to maintain their progress. This can be monthly, bi-monthly, or whatever rhythm works for your life and body.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Good to Know

  • What does a typical appointment look like?

When you arrive, you'll be directed to one of our treatment rooms. Our Chiropractic Assistant will ask you a few questions about how your body is feeling and if you have any specific areas of concern.

The Chiropractic Assistant will have you stand on our chiropractic table and will slowly tilt and lower the table so you are horizontal. This method allows the chiropractor to accurately determine how your body is aligned.

When the chiropractor does adjustments, they will lightly press on your feet to check your alignment, and then ask you to perform a few different movements to determine what areas need attention. When the chiropractor makes an adjustment, they will rest the Activator tool gently against the area of adjustment and the tool will make a low-impact "nudge" against the area. It will feel like a quick tap and make a clicking noise. The chiropractor will check the adjustment and move on to the next area.

The whole appointment generally takes about 15-20 minutes.

  • Do I need a referral to be seen?

No referral needed! Just give us a call at (805) 682-1433 to get started.

  • Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?

Always talk to your doctor, but chiropractic is generally a great support for pregnancy. We use gentle, low-force techniques like the Activator and Webster Technique that are well-suited to pregnancy.

  • What should I wear?

Clothing that you feel comfortable moving in is perfect.

  • Do you take insurance?

We do not take insurance, though we can provide you with a superbill to send to your insurance provider.

  • How much does a chiropractic appointment cost?

Appointment fees vary by the type of appointment, but all appointments cost a flat fee. To learn our most updated costs, please give us a call and we'll be happy to provide a cost breakdown for you.
